Frequently Asked Questions

What is ShareBeam?
ShareBeam is a free, browser-based tool that lets you share files and folders directly between devices on the same local network (Wi-Fi). It uses peer-to-peer WebRTC technology, so your files travel straight from one device to another without being uploaded to any cloud server.
Is ShareBeam free to use?
Yes, ShareBeam is completely free. There are no subscriptions, no sign-ups, and no hidden charges. You can create or join unlimited rooms and transfer files at no cost.
Do I need to install an app?
No. ShareBeam runs entirely inside your web browser. There is nothing to download or install — just open the website on both devices, connect using a room code or QR code, and start sharing.
Is there a file size limit?
ShareBeam does not impose an artificial file size limit. Because transfers happen directly between devices, you can share large files such as videos, ZIP archives, and software. The practical limit depends on your device's available memory and network speed.
Is ShareBeam secure and private?
Yes. Files are sent directly between devices over an encrypted WebRTC data channel and are never stored on our servers. Our servers only help the two devices find each other (signaling); they never see your file contents.
Which devices and browsers are supported?
ShareBeam works on any modern device with an up-to-date browser — Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iPhone/iPad. Recommended browsers include Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari.
How do I connect two devices?
On the first device, open ShareBeam and create a room — you'll get a 6-digit code and a QR code. On the second device, open ShareBeam, choose Join Room, and either scan the QR code or type the 6-digit code. Both devices are now paired and ready to transfer.
Does ShareBeam work without the internet?
For the fastest, fully local transfers, both devices should be on the same Wi-Fi/LAN — the file data then never leaves your local network. The initial connection setup uses a small internet signal, but the actual file transfer is direct and local.
Can I share files between Android and iPhone?
Yes. ShareBeam is cross-platform, so you can transfer files between Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, and Linux in any combination, as long as both devices use a modern browser.
How many devices can join one room?
A room works best with up to about 8 connected devices. Because every device connects directly to every other device, very large groups may experience slower transfers, especially on phones.
Where are my files stored after transfer?
Received files are saved directly to your own device's downloads, just like any normal download. ShareBeam keeps no copy — once the transfer finishes and the room closes, nothing remains on our side.
Why is my transfer slow?
Transfer speed depends on your Wi-Fi/router and device. For best speed, keep both devices on the same network, close to the router, and avoid connecting too many devices to a single room at once.
